Artist Statement – Portrait of a Landscape

I chose the title for this series of urban landscapes when I was already more than halfway through. As a collection, it explores themes of change beauty and resilience in the ecosystem of architecture, people and culture in Sydney’s inner west. It’s a portrait, frank but full of admiration.

Influenced by my impressionist leanings, each painting captures a moment in time, offering something unique and intriguing - whether it’s a figure, a group, a mysterious object, unresolved form or a sign of human activity. The landscapes depict everything from sunny mornings to sultry, rainy evenings. I make no attempt to hide or obscure the realities of urban life and human impact but rather I embrace it all, finding beauty in the mundane.

Using an impressionist style and expressionist palette, this series of landscape paintings represents a collective portrait of where I live and how I experience it. The series was partly planned but, almost like a child, developed in unexpected ways and took on a character of its own.  My role was to navigate my way through, both literally (walking around with a camera and sketching on an ipad) and figuratively, through exploring and examining my own connection with the character of the inner west in my portrayal of it.
