Portrait of a Landscape

My debut solo exhibition “Portrait of a Landscape” runs from 29 August to 3 September 2024 at Corner Gallery, Stanmore in Sydney’s Inner West.

Its the culmination of 12 months development work inspired by a talk I attended at the Michael Reid Art Bar in Pyrmont last year in which Amber Cresswell-Bell delivered some invaluable advice to a group of us ‘emerging artists’ about getting started, finding a voice and getting attention.

One of her key pieces of advice was to get on and stage a solo exhibition. Doing so is both an exercise in discipline and self-development and a reality-check on what it takes to be a working artist.

It’s been amazing to pursue. Off the bat I’ve benefitted from:-

  • relaising how far I have come and how far there is still to go

  • refining my style and medium

  • selecting my target audience

  • upgrading each and every part of my practice

  • meeting artists and art supporters I would never have otherwise met

  • clarifying my aims as an artist and as an advocate for my own art

  • learning about myself from the process of writing and re-writing my artist bio and artist statements (and knowing the difference!)

  • thinking critically about how I represent myself to the world while maintaining my own personality in everything I do.

Looking forward with some trepidation to the launch itself. Not because I’m worried about the work, just because I want to savour every minute and learn as much as I can from the process…and then I can do it better next time.
